a home from home...

Thank you so much for all your lovely welcome home messages, and comments on my photos - it has made coming home a lot easier, feeling the blog love in between the bouts of unpacking!

Yesterday I restocked the fridge, and made it to the park for the boys to climb and run - the house still feels pretty trashed, but I have to be honest, that is just normal life!  One of the things I love about being on holiday is that I'm not surrounded by piles of stuff that need sorting through, or putting somewhere (where?!) else - our house is small and none of us are very tidy, so there are always piles on pretty much every surface, making me feel guilty where ever I look!

This is where we stayed last week, and it is truly a home from home - we have been going there at least once a year for the last 12 years!

Ah, our little Cornish home - every year I mean to take a better picture of the house, and every year I forget!  We are so lucky, it belongs to a very dear family member and we love it so much. It is small and basic but has everything we need, and is in a great location, about 2 miles from Lands End, and a short drive from countless little fishing coves and stunning coastal paths.  Our relationship with the house has changed over the years - when we were childless and both worked full time, we would sometimes laze around all day, then maybe go for an evening clifftop walk, or out for a meal - now we're up and out early, for splashing and sandcastle fun.  Just like at home, lie-ins are a distant, fondly remembered dream!

Here are a few of our favourite seaside spots that we revisited this year....

Penberth

St Michaels Mount
Mousehole (pronounced Mowzel)
Sennen

rockpooling near Mousehole
Lamorna Cove (with our own mini St Michaels Mount in foreground)
Exploring old tin mines along the coast near Zennor
St Ives

Oh so much loveliness!  If you haven't been to Cornwall before I can really recommend it, and the bit that we go to, West Penwith, is a tiny bit of it - there's loads that we haven't explored yet.

We did go to a new place this year, the beautiful National Trust gardens at Trengwainton, where I became OBSESSED with taking close up photos of flowers!  I'll show you some of my favourites pictures tomorrow.

I hope you've had a lovely sunny day,

Rachel x

    1. I'm so glad you had a such a good time Lou! When our Rufus is a bit older we'll be taking a leaf out of your book and staying on the beach till sunset - all the sea air tired him out so we didn't manage it this time. Now we're back we must get together for a glass of wine and a catch up! xx

    1. Oh Caroline you must go one day, it's a really special place. My lovely partner Frank (with Max's help of course) spent ages on that sandcastle, he's such a big kid! xx

    1. Thanks, isn't it an amazing place? Perfect for family holidays, lots to do but so pretty that just sitting doing not a lot feels like a treat!

  4. Came over via Caroline at scrapsofus - Cornwall is a fab destination, I agree. We like you have made it a destination for the past eleven years ( since our daughter was born - so no lie ins to mention!). Mousehole is a great fishing village and the beach at Sennen is wonderful.

  5. I have many childfree memories of Sennen Cove too, those photos have brought them all back!I remember lazing in my campervan, drinking endless cups of tea, reading 2 or 3 books in a week. Those were the days, but exploring your favourite places with your children makes it even more special.

    1. Ah yes, those lazy childfree times are long gone, happily replaced with lovely family adventures - seeing the world through their quirky little eyes is a joy! x

  6. It looks gorgeous, I love the Cornish coast. I don't think I've been that far West in Cornwall for years - the drive from Leeds is long enough as it is! But we had many childhood holidays in Cornwall, and I'd love to re-visit those same places with my kids. x

    1. Hi Gillian, yes I must say we're lucky as we're in the South West anyway, it is a bit of a trek from anywhere further north or east! I really love West Penwith and I know it well, but we should venture along the north coast one day - I went to Tintagel as a child and would love to take my boys there. Maybe one day you can brave the drive - it is so nice taking your kids somewhere you remember from your own childhood. x

  7. Oh wow, I SO love Cornwall! Some great photos of some great places. It's great to see so many people on the beaches all taking home their own precious memories from their holiday. And Cornwall is always so much better when the sun shines. Looks like a great holiday for you and your family x

    1. Hi Jo, how are you? We had a great time thanks, I don't know how Cornish beaches compare with those in Australia but you're certainly right about the sunshine, we were really lucky this year. x

    1. It's amazing there, though I bet Finland is too, in lots of different and amazing ways - I'd love to find out one day! We were really lucky weather wise, and yes all feeling refreshed by it - which is good because there's still 3 weeks to go before school starts again, and it's nice to be enjoying it rather than wishing it away! x

  9. Welcome home and that scenery is just glorious. It's so inspiring to just escape the routine and clutter isn't it? We have piles of stuff around too, drives me bonkers, had to shove it all in the spar e room to get a decent photo if my lounge! melx

    1. Ah, I'm glad I'm not the only one! We don't even have a spare room, I expect if we did it would be a tip - though the rest of the house would be a bit tidier, which would be nice! x

    1. Hi Lianne, glad you like the photos! And yes, I have accepted that I'm not a very tidy person, and my home will never be minimalist - though if I had a massive cupboard to keep all my stuff in so I could just have a few pieces out at a time then I could pretend. I just can't help myself when it comes to collecting lovely things! xx
